Helping Those Affected by the Wideload Closure

As you may have heard, local Wideload Games was shuttered as a part of the Disney layoffs.

The community has also pooled together to share links to various opportunities available at companies such as:

Ryan Olsen has organized this information and more into a handy Google Doc, as well.

Additionally, Carrie Fowler is offering general help with resumes, etc. and will gladly connect people with opportunities at EA. Simply email her at cfowler@ea.com.

If you are among those affected, please be sure to join our IGDA Chicago Facebookgroup or follow us on Twitter (@IGDAChicago) so you can hear the latest about local events where you can network and find support.

Please reference our local developer list for additional avenues of communication and potential employment opportunities.

If you would like to offer support for those affected or share additional hiring information, please email info@www.igdachicago.com.

Hosting A Successful Game Jam

Two years ago I hosted my first game jam. This was my first time organizing something involving so many creative individuals. Since it was just friends gathered in my then tiny apartment there really wasn’t much pressure. The event itself was more of casual riffing and hanging out. This year, I helped host the IGDA Chicago Game Jam. I was used to participating in game jams, but had never planned anything on such a large scale. This blog post will hopefully outline what I thought helped make it a success.

Had a Strong Team

No one can plan a game jam by themselves. You need a strong team to get stuff done. This event would not have been successful with the strong team of the IGDA Chicago. Some people got the pizza, other awesome team members landed top speakers. I felt lucky to the Steve Kerr, to their Michael Jordan (That’s a Chicago basketball reference). I appreciate the judges, the local industry members, our great keynote speakers, and everyone who donated their time.

Solid Theme

For the game jam, our theme was death.  The theme was perfect since the game jam fell on the weekend before Halloween. At first I thought that the theme may have been too broad. I thought that most teams would create similar concepts because of this fact. (On Saturday morning, most people jokingly said that they were adding Death Metal into their game.) It turns out that this wasn’t a problem as everyone interpreted the theme in wildly different games.

Had the People Play the Games.

As Herm Edwards once said, “You play to win the game!” (Hello? that’s my second sports reference). Weirdly enough, most of the game jams that I attended did not encourage people to play each other’s game. Judges of the jams usually based the winners on the team presentations rather than how the games played. For this game jam, we made it a point to have the judges play the games before the teams presented. I think this helped them have a much better idea on what the teams were able to complete during the weekend. Other teams also got up, and played each other’s games. This was a much needed catharsis after a busy 2 and a half days. I think that the teams really enjoyed the camaraderie from actually playing. Seriously, ALL of the games were awesome. I really hope people continue these projects.

Planning and hosting a game jam was much different than being a participant. The experience was enjoyable for different reasons. It was awesome to look out and see the room be filled and know that I had a hand in it. I was still exhausted by the end of it, but it was nice to hang out instead of having to worry about bug hunting. At the same time, hosting a jam is a great responsibility. I wanted to make sure that everyone had a great time while maintaining the space that our gracious hosts let us use. I really want to host more jams in the future. Now that I have this experience under my belt, I’d love to host another. Until next year, fellow jammers!

Play The Games!

Thank You

Special shout out to the Nerdery for letting us use their great facility. We wouldn’t have had a such a successful event without it. Also, thank you to Eugene Jarvis who did the keynote. Kyle Bailey, Carter Dotson, and Dave Fulton for performing the difficult task of judging so many great games. Thanks to all of our industry mentors who stopped by to lend advice. Thanks to all of our sponsors for the great prizes provided as well.

VentureBeat Highlights Chicago Indies

The rising glory of Chicago’s indie scene continues to spread. In the recent VentureBeatarticle, “Who needs triple-A? These 10 next-gen indie games look amazing,” Octodad: Dadliest Catch (Young Horses) and Ray’s the Dead (Ragtag) shine for their stunning potential in the next generation of indie releases. After some quick calculations, we can safely extrapolate that Chicago thus represents ~20% of all awesomeness, so keep up the great work everyone!

A Fine Day for a Picnic

My alarm rings. It’s 7:00am on a Sunday. My game-developer work ethic won’t even let me sleep in on the weekends. The IGDA picnic isn’t until one o’clock, so I set another alarm for myself and get in another hour or two of sleep. When the time finally comes, I double check the event details eleven times and catch a bus up north. Burying my head in a book, I reemerge at my destination, like a zeppelin ride in World of Warcraft.

Lincoln Park is big (the place, not the band), and I feel like I’m checking a quest log when I take out my phone, forced to read through the quest description to know where to go. Luckily, Patrick “Event Planner” McCarron planted a big marker at the south tip of the lake. Thank goodness for mindful game designers—I make my way there without incident.

“We’ve got some chipotle lime marinated flank steak and pineapple teriyaki chicken skewers with cilantro cream sauce.” Pardon me? The silhouette of Master Chef Eric Shofe gleams in a brilliant aura. I try to imagine which stamina boost the food will provide and sadly realize “pleasantly full” is the fanciest buff I’ll receive in the real world, still hoping we have someone who can cleanse “food coma.”

The rest of the picnic cheerfully greets me and the other guests slowly trickle in. Looks like it isn’t too hard to spot big group of nerds. I desperately try to remember the cascade of names rushing down on me and jot down a few. We sit in the cool shade of a large tree and I overhear someone comment, “Whoever invented shade was awesome.” A programmer, probably. A passing breeze reminds everyone of the perfect day. Did the Board plan that too? Looks like someone invested a few skill points in clairvoyance.

Once most people have eaten, a bag filled with board games rattles as the pieces shift within, and the ears of every developer, partner, and child turn in its direction. Sheri pulls out half a dozen hidden-gem board games and asks which one we’d like to start with. Is that Tsuro? I open a text from my brother sent last night and read with uncanny suspicion, “Play ‘Tsuro’ NOW!” I send him a picture of the game board with the note, “On it.”

A few hours later, I grudgingly relinquish my reverie after narrowly losing a game of Can’t Stop. I really don’t want to, but real life buzzes on my phone like an incessant fly. Thanking the incredible organizers and bidding farewell to all my new friends, I head back toward the south-bound zeppelin and embark on my journey back home.

Meeting Notes

Events

August

Eric is taking point on the picnic.

We had great responses to the call for volunteers from the survey! Eric will be finalizing the location then reaching out to the volunteers for help making it happen.

Eric put out a survey on Facebook to see what date works best for the group.

September

Patrick will be organizing a postmortem and tournament for Divekick.

The Chicago Game Jam should move to October so we don’t conflict with a charity game jam being hosted in September.

October

We will work with Marvin on establishing a date for the Third Chicago Game Jam and continue moving forward with planning for it.

Board Business

Regular Meeting Time – WhenIsGood results

We will continue to meet on Sundays, with the second Sunday of the month being our official meeting (when all board members should be present.)

Board of Directors

Patrick has joined the IGDA Chicago Board as of July!

We will need to have an in-person meeting to get the details worked out for the newly filled board.
